The syllabus of B. Arch in Architecture program offered by Department of Architecture and Planning of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is as follows: COURSE OUTLINE ARL 101 CONSTRUCTION-I Objective: The course introduces the first principles of construction through simple elements of basic construction. Content: Introduction to building construction Understanding relationship between architectural design, building construction, building materials, etc Objective of the course is to learn in progression various construction systems, from simple building construction techniques to comprehensive, complex construction methods. Emphasis shall be on reasoning and analysis while acquainting the students with different building elements. The course shall aim at building a strong sense of visualization to enable students to evolve, apply alterative materials and methods of construction. General idea of load transmission in load bearing & frame structures their advantages, disadvantages and suitability. Various types of load bearing and framed structures, their advantages, disadvantages and suitability Introduction to various types of foundations & elements of building from foundation to roof Simple foundation for load bearing walls in stone and brick, Plinth filling, steps, etc. Various types of construction & Standard terms in brick and stone masonry English, Flemish, local bonds, piers, types of stone walls, composite and curved walls, lintels and arches, copings etc Site visits for on-site studies.
