UVCE was established in the year 1917, under the name, Government Engineering college by Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya. It is affiliated to University of Bangalore. It is the 5th Engineering College to be established in the country.

Candidate who want to take admission in Under Graduate engineering course should have to qualify in Karnataka - Common Entrance Test(K-CET)/Aptitude test conducted by Govt. of India. The selection of candidates to the college is done by counseling at CET centre by the government. Candidates belonging to Union Territory, govt. Of India are also admitted to the college by the Central Govt. For admission in Post Graduate engineering cours candidates must have qualified in the GATE and PG-CET entrance exam. Candidates qualified in the test conducted by the Bangalore University are eligible for Research Programmes leading to MSc in Engineering and Doctoral programmes. Admission to UVCE is strictly on the basis of merit. The total admission to all the disciplines and programmes is around 1000.
