The Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad was started in the year 1979, has grown over the years to be one of the important centers of sociology teaching and research in the country. The academic activities of the Department have a unique disciplinary and interdisciplinary orientation, designed to guide and support student development as independent learners as well as to inspire them to critically engage with policies, issues, and social action. Programs offered- IMA The Five Year Integrated Masters (IMA) Programme in Social Sciences by offering a variety of courses at the Centre for Integrated Studies (CIS) of University of Hyderabad. The courses offered by the Department under the auspices of the Integrated Masters programme are the following: Introduction to Study of Society Changing Indian Family Equality and Inequality Caste in Modern India Rural and Urban Societies Roots of Social Protest Contemporary Development Issues Religion and Society Introduction to Social Research Work and Organizations. M.A program- The M.A. Programme in Sociology is a four-semester Programme spread over two years, and consists of ten compulsory courses and six optional courses. The Compulsory Courses for M.A. are the following: 1. Classical Sociological Theory 2. Modern Sociological Theory 3. Research Methods I Survey Research and Basic Statistics; 4. Research Methods II - Qualitative Research Methods 5. Sociology of India 6. Population and Society 7. Social Stratification 8. Urban Sociology 9. Sociology of Development 10. Political Sociology The Optional Courses for M.A. are the following: Decentralized Governance and Development Environment and Sustainable Development Indian Diaspora Sociology of Gender Industrial Relations and Contemporary Capitalism Law, State and Society Modernity and Modernization NGOs and Development People, Nation and State Religion, Law and State Rural Society and Agrarian Change Science, Culture and Society Social Theories of Modernities & Politics of Geography Society & Sexuality Marxism and Capitalism Sociology of Backward Classes Sociology of Communication Sociology of Environment Sociology of Health, Sickness and Healing Sociology of Muslim Communities Sociology of Organizations; Sociology of Culture Technology, Culture and Society M.Phil program- The M.Phil. Programme of Department of Sociology is a preliminary research degree course of one year duration consisting of two-semesters. The course work during the first semester consists of two compulsory courses and one optional course in the broad area of research in which the dissertation is planned. The Compulsory Courses for M.Phil 1st semester coursework are the following: Advanced Sociological Theories Advanced Research Methodology Ph.D The Ph.D Programme is a full-time research programme covering a minimum of two years. Those Ph.D. students who have not done M.Phil coursework will have to do the coursework in Advanced Sociological Theories, Research Methodology and one Optional Course in the broad area of research in which the dissertation is planned.
