The Foundation Course I is the subject of BA First year of Mumbai University. I am providing you the syllabus Mumbai University BA First year Foundation Course I syllabus 1.1 INTRODUCTION In India we find that there are multiplicity of languages, races, religions, cultures, regions, costumes, food-habits, climatic condition, geographical features, historical legacies etc. Geographically speaking, in India we have the areas where snow fall exists, desert areas, drought prone areas and areas of heavy rains and floods too. Hence, the pluralistic nature of Indian Society is inevitable. India is divided into 28 states according their special features. We have to understand the nature of the Indian Society. Therefore, we have to analyse the various features of our society. Since, we are the citizens of India and wanted to live peacefully, wanted to make progress for ourselves and of the nation, then without knowing our society, there can not be harmony among us. This will help us how to live in a democratic society and how to administer the multiplicity of the features of Indian society according to our constitution. Therefore, we must try to understand the Indian Society as its analysis from neutral view. 1.2 INDIAN SOCIETY AS PLURALISTIC The nature of Indian Society is pluralistic which means there are multiple languages spoken and linguistic crisis and even linguistic riots are occured. In India there are multiple ethnicity where one can not boast of his pure racial origin. We also must know that multiple religions are there in India and religious groups and their various ideologies. There is confluence of cultures in Indian Society which affects the living standards of the people of India. Nonetheless, there are various regions and their geographical differences which reflects into rural, urban and tribal. All these dimensions must be analysed so that one can be better acquainted with the pluralistic nature of our Indian Society. 1.2.1 Multi-Lingual Nature One of the feature of Indian Society is that there are many languages spoken in India. According to Linguistic Survey of India there are nearly 179 languages and more than 1652 dialects in India. There are also some dialects spoken by hilly area or Adivasi people or tribal people are not registered in the government records. Language is the medium of communication among the individual and the society.
