The Graduate School of Education of Stanford University grants an undergraduate minor in the field of Education. It is structured to provide a substantial introduction to education through a broad-based and focused study of educational research, theory and practice.

Requirements


Course work completed for the Education Minor need to be approved by the Minor Director and meets the following criteria:

Courses are to be taken for a minimum of 3 units each

3.0 GPA must be maintained for all minor courses

All courses must be taken for a letter grade

Courses used to fulfill the minor requirements may not be used to fulfill any other department degree requirements (major or minor).

1. All students are required to take the core course:
EDUC 101: Introduction to Teaching and Learning
2. All students are required to complete two foundational courses:
EDUC 103B. Socio-cultural Theory and Practices: Race, Ethnicity, and Linguistic Diversity in Classrooms
EDUC 110. Sociology of Education: The Social Organization of Schools
EDUC 120C. Education and Society
EDUC 201. History of Education in the United States
EDUC 204. Introduction to Philosophy of Education

3. Select a subfield of study and complete three electives within that chosen subfield. The following are suggested subfields and electives:

EDUC 103A. Tutoring: Seeing a Child Through Literacy
EDUC 111. The Young Adult Novel: A Literature for & About Adolescents
EDUC 112. Urban Education
EDUC 121X. Hip Hop, Youth Identities, and the Politics of Language
EDUC 149. Theory & Issues in the Study of Bilingualism
EDUC 171. Early Childhood Education Practicum
EDUC 256. Psychological & Educational Resilience Among Children & Youth
EDUC 357. Science and Environmental Education in Informal Contexts

EDUC 117. Research and Policy on Postsecondary Access
EDUC 121X. Hip Hop, Youth Identities, and the Politics of Language
EDUC 165. History of Higher Education in the U.S.
