This SRM was founded in 1985 as SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur, under University of Madras.

SRM has 7 campuses, 4 in Tamil Nadu—Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Tiruchchirappalli and others in NCR, Sonepat and Gangtok
