Re: SMU University Switzerland

Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a private research university founded in April 17, 1911 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South—now part of the United Methodist Church—in partnership with Dallas civic leaders. However, it is non-sectarian in its teaching and enrols students of all religious affiliations.

Franklin University Switzerland was founded in 1969 as a non-profit, independent, post-secondary institution and named after Benjamin Franklin, the United States’ first ambassador to Europe.

As an American liberal arts institution in an international environment, Franklin is fully accredited in the United States and in Switzerland. Small class sizes, individual attention and international and cross-cultural perspectives are hallmarks of the Franklin experience.

60% of Franklin’s 380 students are from North America. All Franklin students participate in the required Academic Travel Program, a credit-bearing course that includes two weeks of faculty-led travel each semester as an extension of class work.

Swiss International Semester Program

Swiss International Semester program is a selective, invitation-only program that allows eligible first-semester SMU students to begin their university career immersed in the American-International experience of Franklin on its campus in Lugano, Switzerland.

This program is designed to give students an early international exposure, including participation in Franklin University Switzerland's academic travel, while providing a structured, highly personalized first-semester small-college experience.

Students invited to the SIS program attend Franklin University Switzerland in the fall semester following high school graduation. They may enter SMU in the spring after fulfilling SMU admission requirements.

SIS students are advised by both SMU and Franklin University Switzerland to ensure that their Franklin courses are part of SMU’s curriculum. Students live on campus at Franklin and at SMU as part of SMU’s two-year residential requirement. Space in this program is limited to a maximum of 30 students.

To express interest in participating in the SIS, one must fill out the SIS Interest Form by March 31. The Admission Committee will review all responses and select the 30 participants who they feel have the greatest interest in and potential to benefit from this international learning experience. All interested students will be notified by April 15 if they are chosen to participate.
