Re: SMU PhD Economics
As you want to do PhD Economics from Singapore Management University so here I am giving you information about it. PhD Economics Eligibility: Candidate must have bachelor’s degree in same relevant discipline from a recognized University. Candidate must have GRE score. Candidate must have TOEFL score. Course Structure: Year 1 Students will spend their first year completing the foundation courses: Microeconomics I (Jingyi Xue and Atsushi Kajii) Microeconomics II (Shurojit Chatterji) Macroeconomics I (Nicolas Jacquet) Macroeconomics II (An Sungbae) Econometrics I (Su Liangjun) Econometrics II (Yu Jun and Anthony Tay) At the end of the first year, all students are required to sit for, and pass, the PhD Qualifying Examination in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics. Year 2 In the second year, students take: International Trade (Chang Pao-Li) International Macroeconomics (Juliana Sun) Applied Econometrics/Empirical Research Project (An Sungbae and Ken Yamada) and eight Advanced Research Topic courses. The Applied Econometrics/Empirical Research Project comprises a 12-week course on applied micro-econometrics and applied macro-econometrics, and the submission of a short empirical research paper. This requirement serves both as the student's first attempt at writing a paper, and an opportunity for the student to learn to carry out an empirical analysis. Each ART is a six-week course. The set of Advanced Research Topic courses that are offered includes: Advanced Topics in Macroeconomics (Thomas J. Sargent) Bayesian Macroeconomics (An Sungbae) Empirical Industrial Organization (Yeo Jungwon) Financial Econometrics (Yu Jun) Fundamentals of Decision Theory (Shurojit Chatterji) Industrial Organization I (Gea M. Lee) Macroeconomic Models with Financial Friction (Zhang Haiping) Mechanism Design (Shurojit Chatterji) Modern Economic Growth (Hoon Hian Teck) Nonparametric Econometrics (Su Liangjun) Time Series Econometrics (Peter Phillips) Urban Economics (Hsu Wen-Tai) The list of ARTs offered each year varies, depending on faculty availability. Year 3 Students in their third year are expected to confirm a supervisor and committee, and pass the proposal defense complete a third year paper; sign up for, and present, at the SOE Research Workshop. All students from the third year onwards are expected to attend the Research Workshop and the SOE Seminar Series. The third year paper is an original piece of research, which would typically form the basis of at least one chapter of the student's dissertation. While the paper may require substantial additional work and polishing before it would be ready for submission to a journal, the paper should be far enough along that it can be taken to be a complete first draft, or working paper. Year 4 and 5 The student is expected to spend Year 4, and if necessary Year 5, working on and completing the dissertation. The student is required to give at least one presentation at the SOE seminar series before graduation.
