Re: Seed Division IARI
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) is the country's premier national Institute for agricultural research, education and extension. It has served the cause of science and society with distinction through first rate research, generation of appropriate technologies and development of human resources. Seed Division IARI IARI, a premier institute for development of improved varieties, seed production and imparting training in the areas of seed science and technology, took the lead and established a separate section of seed testing in the erstwhile Division of Botany in 1961. The highlights of these achievements are- Standardization of hybrid seed production technologies for field crops viz. rice, maize, pearl millet, rapeseed-mustard and sunflower. Comparative evaluation of certified seed over farmers saved seed. Standardization of procedure for seed quality evaluation by x-ray contrast radiography. Basic studies on the mechanism of seed deterioration Standardization of seed enhancement technology. Identification of safe storage places in India. Management of loose smut and Karnal bunt in wheat. Characterization of rice, wheat, sunflower and castor genotypes based on image analysis and development of database. Development of electrophoresis protocols for varietal characterization, identification and genetic purity testing in wheat, rice maize, bajra sorghum soybean, sunflower, cotton and castor. Development of Indian DUS test guidelines for rice and pearl millet by integration of morphological, biochemical and molecular markers. Facilitation of DUS testing through generation of national test guidelines for thirty five crops. Standardization of seed testing procedures in field (ragi, khesari, red gram), vegetable (fenugreek) and green manure (sunhemp, dhaincha) crops and pasture grasses. Assessment and up-gradation of uniformity in seed testing procedures. Contact: Seed Production Unit Dr. Sanjay Kumar In-charge, Seed Production Unit, IARI, New Delhi- 12 Ph.
