Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation formaerly known as. Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai which was established in the year 1888.

It is civic body that governs Mumbai in Maharashtra and is India's richest municipal organization.

Duties of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai are given below --

(A)Obligatory duties ---

1. the maintenance ,construction, and cleaning of drains and drainage works, and of public latrines, urinals and similar conveniences;

2. planning for economic and social development;

3. urban forestry, protection of environment and promotion of ecological aspects;

4. the construction and maintenance of works and means for providing a supply of water for public and private purposes;

5. scavenging and the removal and disposal of excrementitious and other filthy matters, and of all ashes, refuse and rubbish;

6. the reclamation of unhealthy localities, the removal of noxious vegetation and generally the abatement of all nuisances;

7. the regulation of places for the disposal of the dead and the provision of new places for the said purpose;

8. the registration of births and deaths;

9. public vaccination in accordance with the provisions of the (Bombay Vaccination Act, 1877);

10. measures for preventing and checking the spread of dangerous diseases;

11. establishing and maintaining public hospitals and dispensaries and carrying out other measures necessary for public medical relief;

12. the construction and maintenance of public markets and slaughter houses the regulation of all markets and slaughter-houses;

13. the regulation of offensive and dangerous trades;

14. the entertainment of a fire-brigade and the protection of life and property in the case of fire;

15. the securing or removal of dangerous building and places;

16. the construction maintenance, alteration and improvement of public streets, bridges, culverts, causeways and the like;

17. the lighting, watering and cleansing of public streets;

18. the removal of obstructions and projections in or upon streets, bridges and other public places;

19. the naming of streets and the numbering of premises;

20. maintaining, aiding and suitably accommodating schools for primary education .

(B) Discretionary duties

1. slum improvement and upgradation;

2. urban poverty alleviation;

3. the establishment, aiding or maintaining libraries, museums, art galleries, botanical or zoological collections;

4. the laying out or the maintenance of public parks, gardens or recreation grounds;

5. the planting and care of trees on road sides and elsewhere;

6.surveys of buildings or lands;

7. Surveys of buildings or lands
