Rabindra Bharati University was established in 1962 to mark the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first Indian and Asian recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The University was set up with a view to distribute Tagore's thoughts on education. The academic programmes thus, reflect the vision of Tagore in its mission to propagate Tagorean culture and its contemporary relevance through the curricular aspects in the Faculties of Arts, Fine Arts and Visual Arts.

The University through its academic programmes commits itself to the service of the nation in the context of plurality of religions and diversity of cultures without taking into any consideration the distinctions across caste, gender, class and locale.
