Steps to Become Commercial pilot

Commercial pilot is a highly trained person who flies an aircraft to facilitate the movement of people, mail or goods, from one destination to another. Pilot's office is the cockpit which contains all controls, instruments, electronic communication and navigation instruments which are necessary to operate the aircraft. Aircraft of a cockpit is meant for pilot, co-pilots and other crew members. Pilots and Co-pilots, generally sit in this compartment. The most experienced pilot, also known as captain, usually holds the flying commands and supervises all other crew members.

A Commercial pilot must possess a commercial pilot's license which is issued by the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA) for taking up job assignments. Aspirants can procure the license in three steps. Step one is to obtain a Student Pilot License (SPL) from a flying club. After obtaining a SPL, there is a choice of getting either Private Pilot License (PPL) or Commercial Pilot License (CPL). PPL is for those who want to pursue flying as a hobby while CPL is for those who want to secure a full time job. Let us go into the intricacies of the above procedure:

Student Pilot License (SPL): To become a commercial pilot, first step is to procure a Student Pilot License. SPL is similar to a learner license. In other words, this license allows you to get training and it also permits you to take off flights on gliders or small planes that are generally provided by approved flying clubs of the country. This can be obtained from any flying club in India after a test of air regulations, aviation meteorology, air navigation and technical aspect. First, candidates have to appear in an oral examination and they have also to go through a medical test. After medical clearance, candidates have to clear a theory paper. Government sponsored flying club in every State conducts this examination, which is stipulated by the DGCA.

Eligibility for a Commercial Pilot License

1. The minimum academic qualification to enroll for an SPL is class X.

2. Candidates must have age of at least 16 years.

3. Candidates are required to go through a medical fitness test. This is not a major hurdle unless one has some serious ailment or handicap. Candidates also need good vision i.e 6/6.

4. A security clearance and a bank guarantee of Rs.10,000 is also necessary.

Preparing for the examination of SPL:

Generally, the test is of an objective-type and its aim is to judge the proficiency of the candidate in general awareness, reasoning power and analytical ability.

Private Pilot Licence (PPL)

After getting SPL, it is imperative to procure PPL during which a candidate is accompanied by the flying instructor to proceed for initial flying training.

Acquiring PPL is the first step into aviation's finest arena. It is equivalent to your driving license which permits you to become private pilot of an aircraft. But at the same time, it gives you certain privileges and limitations, like your car driving license. During training, the instructor teaches practical aspects of flying to the trainee pilot. Then the candidate gets his first flight normally after about 15 hours of dual flying training that may include cross-country flying. A total of 60 hours of flying is needed of which 20 hours minimum should be solo and 5 hours cross-country.

As airplanes are expensive to own, they are usually owned by the clubs and rented out to the private pilots after they get trained and they can act as a pilot in command on the airplanes and can also bring along passengers.

Eligibility for a Private Pilot License

1. Candidates must have attained the age of at least 17 years.

2. Must have cleared intermediate with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM).

3. Candidates have to clear a medical fitness test, even if they had cleared it at the time of acquiring SPL.

Candidates who stand by the eligibility criteria are entitled to give theory examination conducted by D.G.C.A. in all the government sponsored flying clubs. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the mathematical and scientific ability of the candidate. However, main subjects during training are- Air Regulation, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Aircraft Engines and Seamanship. The curriculum is set in a manner that not only gives you the overall knowledge about the body of an aircraft, principles and rules of flying but it also provides you intense knowledge about airspeed, cockpit instrumentation and knowledge about a particular types of aircrafts.

After clearing the examination, candidates are required to deposit a prescribed amount of money. Although, fees vary from state to state and school to school and are subject to change, yet it has been observed that approximate fees for an hour of flying is Rs. 1,000 in India. However, various states offer separate subsidies of varying amounts up to the PPL stage.

Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

It is only Commercial Pilot License (CPL) that gives you the privilege of flying for compensation or on hire. The CPL training covers everything from flight instruction and crop dusting to piloting large airliners and so on. But, it is necessary to hold at least a Private Pilot License before you start training for the CPL. In India, CPL can only be acquired through Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Udan Academy, Rae Bareilly. Most of the airlines in the country take on pilots with commercial Pilot License, specially Indian Airlines and Air India. However, some airlines provide extensive training where pilots are put through rigorous technical training on the specific aircraft of individual airlines.

Eligibility for a Commercial Pilot License

1. Candidate should have minimum age of 18 years and maximum age of 30 years.

2. Candidate must have a current PPL and at least three years of flying experience.

3. They have to clear medical fitness test which is conducted by AIM.

4. Candidates need minimum of 250 hours of flying experience (inclusive of 150 hours of solo flying, 25 hours of cross country flying, 10 hours of instrument flying and 5 hours of solo night flying). But, as per a recent news report, in response to the huge shortage of pilots in the country, DGCA has now, reduced the number of flying hours to 200. It is expected to help budding pilots to get off the ground quicker.

5. Even for CPL, candidates are required to clear through a theory exam. This examination also consists of questions on Air Regulation, Aviation Meteorological, Air Navigation and Technical Planning.

Co-Pilot

You can easily get a co-pilot assignment after getting CPL license and training experience. Co-pilot shares flying and other duties, such as communicating with air traffic controllers and monitoring the instruments with the pilot. Co-pilot is also called First Officer in the aircraft. To become a co-pilot, required numbers of flying hours and CPL license, is an eligibility requirement. Your promotion depends upon your flying experience and vacancies available.

Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL)

ATPL is the highest license you can get as a pilot and it allows you to fly any type of aircraft. The pilot in command i.e captain of a multi crew aircraft needs to have ATPL. Even after procuring CPL, a pilot has to undergo a never ending process of training. They have to clear proficiency tests and medical tests more than 3 times a year. Their proficiency and flying hour subsequently contribute to their license and they finally get ATPL. These licenses are continuously reviewed through clearing medical and other tests after a particular period of time.
