The NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) accepts applications for the position of Astronaut Candidate on the basis of required qualification.

International Space Station Program
The ISS is a permanent laboratory in a realm and gravity, temperature, and pressure can be manipulated at station for a variety of scientific and engineering pursuits that are impossible in ground-based laboratories.

Astronaut Responsibilities
Astronauts are involved in all aspects of assembly and on-orbit operations of the ISS include:
Extravehicular activities (EVA)
Robotics operations using the remote manipulator system
Experiment operations
Onboard maintenance tasks

Astronauts are required to have a detailed knowledge of followings:
The ISS systems
Operational characteristics
Mission requirements and objectives
Supporting systems and equipment


Qualification Requirements

Astronaut Candidate (Non-Piloting background):
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics

Physical requirements:
Distant and near visual acuity: Must be correctable to 20/20, each eye

Blood pressure not to exceed 140/90 measured in a sitting position

Standing height between 62 and 75 inches

Academic Requirements

*- Degrees in Technology (Engineering Technology, Aviation Technology, Medical Technology, etc)

*- Degrees in Psychology (except for Clinical Psychology, Physiological Psychology, or Experimental Psychology which are qualifying)

*- Degrees in Nursing

*- Degrees in Exercise Physiology or similar fields

*- Degrees in Social Sciences (Geography, Anthropology, Archaeology, etc)

*- Degrees in Aviation, Aviation Management, or similar fields


Selection Procedure:

1. Preliminary screening of applications, additional information may be requested from some applicants

2. Interview may be required to obtain a flight physical.

To become an Astronaut with NASA you need to apply for one of the programs which are conducted by NASA, the details of the same are mentioned below:

Application Procedures for Astronaut Candidate Program is as given below::

NASA will be accepting applications for the Astronaut Candidate Program starting December 14, 2015 for the following programs:

Civilian Applicants

Applications should be submitted through the Office of Personnel Management's USAJOBS web site. The Supplemental Application in a row must be completed and transcript(s) must be uploaded as guided in the USAJOBS vacancy announcement.

Active Duty Military Applicants

Active duty military personnel should submit applications through the Office of Personnel Management’s USAJOBS and to their particular military service. Active duty military aspirants must also follow the requested procedures of their military service. Please contact the military service for additional application procedures.

Astronaut Candidate Program

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration accept applications for the posts of Astronaut Candidate on an as needed basis.

NASA will be accepting applications for a new class of astronauts starting December 14, 2015.
