Re: Presidency University Zoology Merit List

The 'Department of Biological Sciences (DBS)' is the most youthful self-governing interdisciplinary division in the 196 years history of 'Administration University', some time ago 'Administration school'.

In spite of the fact that, the underlying staff enlistments at Presidency University have taken after the six prior orders – 'Natural science', 'Organic chemistry', 'Biotechnology', 'Sub-atomic Biology and Genetics', "Physiology" and 'Zoology', as of late Biological Sciences have turned out to be exceptionally interconnected, and it was energetically imagined that the University will be profited from the joining of these different divisions in coming years.

This recently formed department is fully engaged in various interdisciplinary research activities:

• “Biochemical characterization of SarA and SarR regulators in S. aureus to study molecular genetics” DBT, Govt. of India, 2014-2016. (PI: Prof Adhar C Manna. Rs. 50,00,000).
• “Understanding mechanism of oxidative stress responses by studying catalase regulation in S. aureus”. BRNS, Department of Atomic Energy, 2014-2016. ( PI: Prof. Adhar C Manna. Rs. 26,64,750).
• Studies on enhancing biological control mechanism of aquatic weed, water hyacinth through integration of insects and fungal agents. ( DST under SERB- OYS Scheme). PI: Dr Puja Ray.
• Molecular dissection of polyamine mediated hyper-osmotic stress tolerance in cultivars of indica rice (DBT, Govt. of India, RGYI-Grant); 2013-2016. PI: Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Co-PIs: Dr. Kamala Gupta and Dr. Arijit Bhattacharya (Tripura University, Tripura).
• Culture dependent and independent analyses of prokaryotic communities from the burrows, casts, and guts of earthworms from in and around Kolkata (West Bengal Biodiversity Board, Govt. of West Bengal; 2012-2015. PI: Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Co-PI: Souryadeep Mukherjee.
• Biochemical and Molecular Aspects of Arsenic Tolerance in Rice Cultivars (DST, Govt. of India, Inspire Fellowship); 2012-2017. PI: Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Co-PI: Dr. Amit Dutta (Dept. of Civil Engg., Jadavpur University, Kolkata).
• Targeting Apoptosis-Autophagy Network in Virus Associated Human Cancers – A Therapeutic Approach (Ramanujan Fellowship, DST, Govt. of India); 2013-2018. PI: Dr. Abhik Saha.
• “Conservation & Documentation of Wild Biodiversity in Bethune College Campus & Surroundings” funded by West Bengal Biodiversity Board[506/3K(BIO)-4/2009 dated 09.12.2009], Govt. of West Bengal, India, started from February 2010. Duration: Three Years. Amount: Rs.8, 00,000/-. Co-PI: Dr. Kamala Gupta.
• “Identification and documentation of microbes from sewage effluents of different localities in Kolkata” UGC-MRP No: F.W.PSW-042/10-11(ERO) started from November, 2010.Duration: One and half years. Amount: Rs. 1, 47,000/-. PI: Dr. Kamala Gupta.
• DST-SERB Major Research Project entitled “Study the molecular mechanism of Polyamine action during salinity stress in indica rice cultivars” SERB/LS-553/2012. PI: Dr. Kamala Gupta.
• “Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Microbial Strains capable of Aromatic Hydrocarbon Biodegradation” (Funding Agency: University Grants Commission). PI: Souryadeep Mukherjee.
• Benthic-pelagic linking: A tool to study marine ecosystem functioning. DST Fast-track Project for Young Scientist (DST New Delhi). PI: Dr. Sumit Mandal.
