The University of Illinois Police Training Institute is one of the largest and longest running police academies in the United States.

The institute has trained thousands of police and correctional officers since its inception, preparing students to be leaders and professionals in the ever more important peace-keeping function in our communities.

Basic Law Enforcement Training

The 14-week, 560-hour basic law enforcement course (BLE) exceeds the requirements set by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board for all new police officers in the State of Illinois.

This high-quality resident program utilizes current principles of adult learning to prepare students for classes, allowing us to optimize performance-based, hands-on instructional methods. Community policing values are integrated throughout the course with emphasis on the service functions that are so much a part of todays law enforcement mission.

Prerequisites-

The applicant must pass every test to be considered for the program.

The required performance to pass each test is based upon sex and age (decade).

While the absolute performance is different for the 8 categories, the relative level of effort is identical for each age and sex group. All recruits are being required to meet the same percentile rank in terms of their respective age/group.

The performance requirement is that level of physical performances that approximate the 40th percentile for each age and sex group.
