Re: PG Courses after MBBS Abroad

If a student completes one’s post graduation in any country abroad cannot do Registration in Medical Council of India nor join any Institute as faculty. But students who have passed MBBS from India & completed Post Graduation abroad are allowed to Practice in India.

According to current trends, people go to the following three places for specialist training:

1. USA

For admissions in USA, all International Medical Graduates need to clear USMLE.

USMLE – United States Medical Licenses Examination
Applicants appearing for USMLE are known as IMG i.e. International Medical Graduates who has passed MBBS or Under graduation outside USA.
USMLE is a 3 steps Examination.

Step 1 – It comprises Basic Sciences and is an MCQ pattern exam. It is conducted in Study Centre in India and USA also.

Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge) – It is on clinical sciences and is also an MCQ pattern exam. It is conducted in Study Centre in India and USA also.

Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills) – It is on clinical skills assessment and is a practical exam conducted in USA only.

Step 3 – It is also clinical exam and is not required in all states of USA

After completion of all three states applicant is awarded MD degree and are eligible to practice in USA.

2.United Kingdom

From June 2006 Government of United Kingdom has passed a Rule that if an International Medical Graduate wants to take admission to Post Graduation in UK has to prove that there is No applicant from UK or Europe Available for that post then and only then he can eligible to admission to PG course in UK.
It simply means doors for IMGs are closed now for UK. British Nationals are considered as an IMG even if they have got their medical degree outside of Europe.

The licensing exam for UK is the PLAB which is conducted by General Medical Council (GMC),UK.

After completing a Royal College fellowship, applicants get an FRCS/FRCP/FRCOG/FRCOpth etc degree.

The alternate path to get these degrees without doing residency in UK is to get a residency position in recognized teaching hospitals in India, and appear for the Royal College Exams from within India.

Student can get MRCS/MRCP/MRCOG etc from here in India and after completing it student can get fellowships later.

For MRCP Part 1 Part 1 Exam one must have at least 18 months experience in medicine since graduation.

Students can apply for MRCP (UK) Exams for centers in India at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Cochin.

3.Australia

The licensing exam in Australia is held by the AMC.
Step 1 is clinical subjects MCQs, and Step 2 is practical exam.

4.Ireland
Applicant should appear for TRAS to work as a medical practitioner in the Ireland. It is conducted by the Medical Council of Ireland
