PHYSICS

Unit I: Physical World and Measurement

Physics - scope and excitement; nature of physical
laws; Physics, technology and society.
Need for measurement: Units of measurement; systems
of units; SI units, fundamental and derived units.
Length,
mass and time measurements; accuracy and precision
of measuring instruments; errors in measurement, si
gnificant
figures. Dimensions of physical quantities, dimensi
onal analysis and its applications.

Unit II: Kinematics
Frame of reference. Motion in a straight line: Posi
tion-time graph, speed and velocity. Uniform and no
n-uniform
motion, average speed and instantaneous velocity. U
niformly accelerated motion, velocity-time, positio
n-time
graphs, relations for uniformly accelerated motion
(graphical treatment). Elementary concepts of diffe
rentiation and
integration for describing motion, Scalar and vecto
r quantities: Position and displacement vectors, ge
neral vectors
and notation, equality of vectors, multiplication o
f vectors by a real number; addition and subtractio
n of vectors.
Relative velocity. Unit vector: Resolution of a vec
tor in a plane - rectangular components. Scalar and
vector product
of vectors. Motion in a plane. Cases of uniform vel
ocity and uniform acceleration-projectile motion. U
niform circular
motion.
