The Optics 11 conference is organised by Nit Calicut in 2011. The Department of Physics is a department of NIT Calicut is an emerging centre for higher education in Physics and Engineering Physics.

The department is has focussed areas of research are in Optics and Photonics, Unconventional Electronics and Condensed Matter Physics.

The department offers a Postgraduate course in Photonics and an undergraduate BTech course in engineering physics.

A large number of research programmes are available in the department.

Advanced research labs are available in Nonlinear optics and lasers, Unconventional Electronics and Photonics, Organic Electronics, Applied Optics and Instrumentation, and Condensed Matter modeling and simulation.
