Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) is a screening test conducted for admission to MSc, Integrated PhD and PhD programmes in Physics, Theoretical Computer Science, Neuroscience and Computational Biology at public research institutes in India. It has been declared as a National Eligibility Test by Science and Engineering Research Board.

Subject-wise Eligibility Criteria for JEST


For PhD Program in Physics:
One holding M.Sc. in Physics or M.Sc./M.E/M.Tech in related disciplines

One holding M.Sc. in Mathematics/Applied Physics/Applied Mathematics/ Optics & Photonics/Instrumentation/Electronics will also be considered at IIA

BE or B. Tech will also be considered at IISc, IMSc, ICTS-TIFR, IUCAA, JNCASR, NCRA-TIFR, TIFR-TCIS, RRI, IISER Mohali, IISER Pune, IISER Thiruvananthapuram and SNBNCBS

Final year B.Sc. and first year M.Sc. in Physics/Electronics/Astronomy/Applied Mathematics students may also apply to be pre-selected for research scholarship at IUCAA

M.Sc. in Physics, Engineering Physics or Applied Physics will also be considered at IPR; TIFR, only B.Tech Engineering Physics & M.Sc.. Physics are eligible


For Theoretical Computer Science/Neuroscience/Computational Biology
One must have an M.Sc./ME/M.Tech/MCA in Computer Science and related disciplines

M.Sc./ME/M.Tech/MCA in any Engg or Science discipline, with good mathematical skills and strong interest in biological problems for PhD in Computational Biology at IMSc


For Integrated M.Sc./M.Tech-PhD Program

For at HRI, IISER-Pune, ICTS-TIFR, SNBNCBS, NCRA-TIFR & TIFR-TCIS one with Bachelor degree will also be considered for the Integrated M.Sc., PhD Program in Physics

At IMSc, graduates with Bachelor degree in Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Com
puter Sci./IT/Engg will also be considered for admission in Physics and in Theoretical Computer Science


For Integrated M.Tech-PhD Program at IIA
One should hold Graduates with M.Sc. (Physics/Applied Physics)/Post-B.Sc. (Hons) in Optics and Optoelectronics/Radio Physics and Electronics/BE/B. Tech degree in subjects mentioned above will be considered.


For Integrated PhD Program at IISER, Thiruvananthapuram:
One should hold Graduates with Bachelors degree in Physics/Technology/Engineering will be considered for the Integrated PhD Program in Physics


M. Sc. Program at HRI
B. Sc. (Physics) or B.E./B.Tech. degree in any discipline


Age Criteria

There is no restriction on age for appearing in JEST examination; however, each participating institute has its own eligibility criteria


No of Attempts

There is no restriction on the number of times one can appear for the JEST examination

JEST Application Fee

An Application Fee of Rs. 400 (Rs 200 for SC/ST, Female applicants only
Application Fee is waived for Female applicants belonging to SC/ST.


Documents Required with Application Form

Documents to be uploaded at the time of JEST Application Form filling:

Uploading Documents
- Scanned Photograph.
- Scanned Signature.
-Educational documents.

Reference documents
- Credit card or Debit Card.
-Email ID.
-Qualifying examination mark sheet.


JEST Admit Card

Admit Card is available online at the official website. It will not be sent by post/email.
To download admit card, one can use User ID and Password.
Details present on the admit card are name, User ID, exam city, centre, date and time.
One has to bring hard copy of admit card along with one photo ID proof to the exam centre.


JEST Result

Results will be declared online at the JEST official website.
Applicants have to download score card by using their User ID and Password.
After qualifying the prescribed cut off for JEST, one will be called for interview round.


JEST Exam Pattern

JEST conducts exam mainly for Physics subject. Question paper for physics will be divided into 3 sections- Part A, Part B and Part C.

Mode of examination: JEST examination is conducted in Offline mode.

Duration: 3 hours is provided to a candidate to complete their paper.

Type of questions: questions will be asked in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) format.

Maximum marks: Paper will be of 100 marks in total.

Mathematical Methods-
Vector algebra and calculus, Linear algebra, Tensors, Curvilinear coordinate system, Special functions, linear differential equations, Elements of sturm-liouville theory, Fourier series and fourier transforms, Complex analysis, Laplace transforms, Error analysis, Elements of probability theory, Elementary properties of discrete groups.


Classical Mechanics-
Generalized coordinates, principle of least action, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of mechanics, Newtons laws, conservation of energy and momentum, collisions, Symmetry and conservation laws, Small oscillations and normal modes, Special relativity in classical mechanics, Central force problem, Kepler problem.


Electromagnetism and optics-
Fields in conducting, dielectric, diamagnetic and paramagnetic media, Electrostatics and magnetostatics, boundary value problems, multiple expansion, Faradays law and time varying fields; displacement current, Energy and momentum of electromagnetic fields, Maxwells equations, Propagation of plane electromagnetic waves, reflection, refraction, Diffraction, interference, polarization, Electromagnetic waves in dispersive and conducting media.


Quantum Mechanics -
Schrodinger equation, Uncertainty principle, Central potentials, hydrogen atom, Orbital and spin angular momenta, addition of angular momenta, Variational principle, Time independent perturbation theory, Time dependent perturbation theory, Matrix formulation of quantum theory, Unitary transformations, Hermitian operators.


Thermodynamics and statistical physics-
Elements of kinetic theory, Laws of thermodynamics, work and heat, thermodynamic potentials, Maxwells relations, Classical and quantum statistics, Fermi and Bose gases, Black body radiation, Statistics of paramagnetism, Classical ideal gas, harmonic oscillators, Statistical ensembles, Partition function.


Electronics -
Basics of semiconductor; p-n junctions, active filters and oscillators; basics of OPAMPs and their applications; basics of digital electronics
