The Union Public Service Commission of India was virtually established by the British Government as early as in 1974 during the British rule.

Stages of IAS Selection Procedure

The competitive examination comprises of two successive stages:
1. Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination
2. Civil Services (Main) Examination
a) Written Examination
b) Interview
3. Final Selection

Exam pattern:

Name of the paper No. of MCQs Max. marks Minimum marks Duration of exam
General Studies Paper I 100 200 33% 2 hours
General Studies paper II 80 200 2 hours
General Studies paper II (X series) 80 200 2 hours 20 minutes
Total 400

Important dates (Tentative)
