| pawan | Re: IITK New SAC The New Student Activity Centre (SAC) of IITK (Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur) is the centre of all student activities and has recently emerged as one of the main venues for most of the student held events. Every year, it witnesses musical extravaganza night, special film screenings, stand-up comedy acts, talks and discussions by eminent people, plays and many more such programs. Not just the students but the entire campus community is making use of its facilities. Every day, one can see a mix crowd of men, women, children and students packing the sports complex or the eating joints in the area. If it happens to be a weekend, one can easily come across poor children with their ever smiling faces who come there to learn from the charitable students determined to bring a change in the society through good education. One of the star attractions of the New SAC is an artificial climbing wall where adventure lovers are often seen flexing their muscles to reach to the top. The climbing wall has 3 sections of varying grades each of height 11.4 meters. The other major facilities include: Sports Complex It houses high-class indoor courts for badminton, table tennis, squash and billiards. The Badminton hall has 3 courts, the Squash hall has 2 courts, the Table Tennis hall has 8 tables and the Billiards hall has 7 tables. In addition, it has a spacious yoga and aerobics hall and a fully air-conditioned well-equipped Gymnasium with a professional trainer for assistance. The facility remains open from 6 AM to 11 PM and can be used by all. However, one requires availing a membership to sweat out in Gymnasium, practice in Yoga hall or play Billiards. Open Air Theatre (OAT) The OAT has a seating capacity of 2500+ people. It is mainly used for student festivals like Antaragni, Techkriti, Udghosh, Freshers night, inter-hall and intra-hall competitions; for screening films by Films and Media Council; and for holding talks by professional players organized by Games and Sports council. Food Court This is one of the most preferred hangout zones for the students and community residents alike. The court has 4 outlets including the recently opened Dominos outlet which is open from 10 AM to 4AM in the wee hours. There are a lot of options to try viz. snacks, desserts, rolls, parathas, North Indian dishes, etc. Though the options are slightly limited for the true foodies, it still managed to attract crowds especially students who are often looking for options to break the monotony of having mess food. Student Clubs New SAC has separate offices for different clubs functioning under Student Gymkhana. One of such offices is used by an NGO called Prayas for imparting education to poor kids of IITK workers and those coming from surrounding villages of Naankaari and Barasirohi. The activities are managed by students and faculty who volunteer with the organization. |
