Shaleen | Re: National Institute of Immunology The National Institute of Immunology in Newdelhi is an institution supported by the department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The institute concentrates on research based on the basic mechanism in body defence, host-pathogen interactions and other related areas with a view to contribute to the creation of an internationally competitive intellectual knowledge base as a sustainable source of innovative futuristic modalities of potential use in health care. The institute follows a two way strategy of linking excellence in rigorous fundamental research with the pragmatic pursuit of emerging application possibilities in entrepreneurial practices. There are about 30 independent research groups working in disciplines of modern biology at National Institute of Immunology. The group concentrates on 4 major areas for researches. They are Gene Regulation Immunity & Infection Molecular Design and Reproduction & Development Autonomous Institutions The institute is providing interdisciplinary teaching and training including doctoral program in academic affiliation with the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi for enhancing national research competence in the field of life science. Dr. Chandrima Shaha is the Director of Naional Institute of Immunology in New Delhi. Dr. Shaha joined the institute in 1984 and was the deputy director of the Institute for the last 2 years. Her works provided a deep understanding of cell death process that can facilitate development of improved therapeutics for diseases associated with improper cell death. Academics Doctoral Program and Short Term Training Programs are provided by the Institute. Later summer training programs were in the institute but the program got discontinued by the institute from 2007 onwards. A long term training program leading to PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University is the Doctoral program of National Institute of Immunology. Around 30 to 35 scholars are given admission in the program every year. The selection was based on national competitive written examination followed by interview. The areas of research in National Institute of Immunology was Chemical Biology Genetics & Cell Signaling Immunity and infection Molecular and cellular Biology Reproduction & Development Structural & computational Biology Minimum Qualification for attending the program 1) M Sc in any branch of science (eg: biology, chemistry mathemtics, physics) or M Tech or MBBS or M.V.Sc or M Pharm or equivalent qualification, recognized by Jawaharlal Nehru University 2) 1st division or equivalent grade or at least 60% of aggregate score in al major examinations from senior secondary certificate (10+2) 3) Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination in this year can also apply for the program. 4) Reservation of seats: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC and 3% physically handicapped. The application for the program can be submitted in the month of November or December for getting admitted in the PhD program of July Session. The tentative dates can happen every year. Application Procedure • Application need to send through online from nii.res.in or can submit a hand written or typed application on A4- size paper in the format given below. The typing should be just like the letters shown in Senior Secondary School Certificate. • All pages of the application are to be signed and the cross demand draft of Rs 1000/- of 6 months validity should be accompanied with the completed application. The DD should be taken in favor of “Director, National Institute of Immunology”, payable at Canara Bank Jit Singh Marg, New Delhi. For SC/ST DD of Rs 500/- is accepted. The documents proving the relevant information should be submitted. • 2 recent passport size photo need to be enclosed with the application and of this one should be signed and pasted on the application form. 2 self addressed envelops, of which one fixed with postage stamp of Rs 5 and other without postage stamp. • Application along with demand draft should be sent to Administrative Officer, National Institute of Immunology, Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, New Delhi- 110067. • In completed application and applications received after the closing date will be rejected. • Selection Process: Written qualifying examination is the gate way for the doctoral program of National Institute of Immunology and the examination is for analyzing the ability to comprehend, analyze and reason. So the examination is based on the general aptitude test and no special pattern or syllabus is designed for the examination. The examination for current year was given on 19th February 2012. The centers of the examination are Bangalore, Delhi, Calcutta and Pune. After the results declaration on 29th February 2012 there will be interview for the selected candidates. The interview for the current year was given on June 7th to 10th, 2012. The interview having 2 phases will short list the candidates and in the final 2 days there interview performances. Those who are provided with admission in the PhD program will be given 2nd class train fare on giving the proof of the journey. The program began on 16th July this year and the dates can be same for 2013 admissions. PhD Stipend: The institute will provide a fellowship stipend of Rs 16000/- 18000/- and 20000/- per month depending on the degree and qualification. The center has developed data bases and software for interrelating the sequence and structural features of various bio synthetic proteins to the chemical structure of metabolites that they synthesize. The center has also established major computational resources including a Sunfire 2200 cluster with 16 dual core CPU’s an Apple G5 group cluster with 16 CPU’s, Mac OS * G5 and Mac Pro workstations, SGI servers and intel linux, or Windows workstations. The Bio Informatics Center at National Institute of Immunology is conducting the Short Term Training programs. The institute provides project work towards partial fulfillment of post graduate degrees for limited number of students and 2 sessions are conducted in a year that is July to December session and January to July session. The student should have passed the all major examinations from 10th onwards with 60% marks. The selection is given by the Head of the Departments of respective study by enclosing the academic resume of the candidate with duration and period of the proposed project work. The admission is given not on the basis of the request forwarded by the students and no recommendations were accepted by the institutes for providing admission in the program. The last date for submitting the admission request by the Head of the Department for the post graduate research project are on January 31st for July to December Session and July 31st for January o July session for the coming year.
