The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is an educational foundation and a non-profit organisation, established in 1996, based in New Delhi which promotes science, mathematics, general knowledge, introductory computer education and English language skills among school children in India through various Olympiad examinations.

The National Science Olympiad starts with an examination held at nearly 1400 schools across the country and culminates with the international Olympiads at different corners of the world. SOF organizes 6 Olympiads each year.


Key Dates for NSO (Tentative)

1. Application deadline 30 days before the exam date
2. Level 1 exam November
3. Level 1 result December
4. Level 2 exam February
5. Level 2 result March


Eligibility and Pattern

Students from class I to XII can participate. There is a different exam paper for each class.

The question paper consists of 35 multiple choice questions of 40 marks for classes I to IV, and 50 multiple choice questions for classes V to XII of 60 marks, to be answered in one hour.

5 questions that are part of the Achievers section carry 3 marks each whereas the remaining questions carry one mark each. Students are required to mark answers on an OMR sheet.

Results are announced which includes the students international rank, zonal rank and school rank.


Registration Process

The SOF NSO is open to the students of classes 1 to 12.
Prospectus containing the Registration forms is sent to all schools registered with SOF.
Schools need to return the registration forms to SOF, duly filled in and complete in all respects.


Registration Fee

Schools in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan & Nepal pay to SOF a registration fee of Rs 125 (including GST) per student / Olympiad towards cost of the examination.
Schools may charge an additional Rs 25 per student towards allowance of in charge, remuneration to teachers to teach and guide and for other expenses.
No fee is required from students suffering from any major physical disability or an Indian student whose parent was martyred during defence operations.


NSO - Application Process

The students of class 1 to 12 can apply for NSO through their respective schools. One can follow the below steps to apply-

Prospectus containing the registration forms will be sent to the schools registered with SOF. Students can receive the registration forms from their respective schools.

In case the school is not registered with SOF, one can still request the prospectus by contacting SOF through phone (0124-4951200) or email (info@sofworld.org).

One must fill the registration forms with the required details and submit it to the respective schools.

The schools must then return the duly filled registration forms to SOF.

One must note that they also need to pay a registration fee for applying for NSO.


NSO - Results

The results of the NSO are usually declared within 8 weeks of the exam.
The schools registered with the SOF directly receive the results.
Students can also check the results on the website of SOF.
The results of Level 1 exam are usually declared during the last week of December.
The results of Level 2 exam are usually declared in the month of March.


Exam Structure


The SOF National Science Olympiad is conducted at two levels:

Level 1:

The first level is organized in the respective schools of the participants during school hours.

(i) The level 1 competition is an objective-type test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 5 to class 12.

(ii) The question paper consists of three sections:
For Class 1 to Class 10
Section-1: Logical Reasoning
Section-2: Science
Section-3: Achievers Section

For Class 11 and Class 12
Section-1: Physics/Chemistry
Section-2: Achievers Section
Section-3 : Mathematics/Biology

(iii) There are separate question papers for each class.

(iv) The medium of the test is English.

(v) CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers.

(vi) The exam is conducted during school hours.


Level 2:

The level 2 is conducted for students of class 3 to class 12. The qualifiers to second round would include the following:

Top 5% of candidates, class wise, who appear in the 1st level exam
In case of a tie of marks, due weightage to marks scored in different sections will be given. Each section is accorded separate weightage.


Top 25 rank holder class wise & Zone wise
Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & scores 50% qualifying marks
In case registration is received section wise, top rank holder, irrespective of section will qualify for the 2nd level.
For section wise registrations, winners of gold medal may not necessarily qualify for the second level.


NSO - Awards

The top-performing students and schools will be felicitated with awards at the international and zone level.
