1. Answer any FIVE of the following in about
30 words each : (5  3 = 15)
(a) Dangers are no more light, if they once seem light; and more dangers have deceived men than forced them.
(i) From which essay is this line taken?
(ii) What does Bacon convey in this line?
(b) It is the wisdom of rats, that will be sure to leave a house some what before its fall.
(i) What is the wisdom of rats?
(ii) What does Bacon try to convey?
(c) For a crowd is not a company; and faces are but a gallery of pictures; and talk but a tinkling cymbal, where there is no love.
(i) What does Bacon try to imply?
(ii) Bring out the simile.
(d) For he that is plentiful in expenses of all kinds will hardly be preserved from decay.
(i) Explain “Plentiful is expenses”.
(ii) What is the advice given by the author?

2. Write short essays on any TWO of the following in about 100 words each : (2  5 = 10)
(a) Michael Drayton’s “Tell me, thou skilful Shepherd Swain”.
(b) Bacon’s “Of Wisdom for a man’s self”.
(c) The comic element in ‘‘Dr. Faustus’’.
(d) Ben Jonson’s theory of humours.
3. Write THREE of the following in about 200 words each : (3  10 = 30)
(a) Write a critical appreciation of Bacon’s essays.
Or
(b) Write in brief the structure of the Book of Job.
(c) Comment on the subject and structure of the sonnets prescribed from Wyatt and Surrey.
Or
(d) Write on the pastoral elements of the poem “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love”.
(e) Bring out the conflict between good and evil in “Dr. Faustus”.
Or
(f) Comment on the role of the conspirators in the play “Everyman in His Humour”.
4. Write any TWO essays in about 200 words each :
(2  10 = 20)
(a) Attempt a critical appreciation of Bacon’s
“Of Friendship”.
(b) How does Shakespeare immortalize his friend in his sonnets?
(c) “Inordinate thirst for power is the key note of Faustus’s character – Justify.
(d) Consider “The Book of Job” as a drama.
