Independent schools offer parents an alternative to a public school education.

The Office of the Inspector of Independent Schools is responsible for administering the Independent School .

Educational Standards and Requirements

Children enrolled in Grades Kindergarten to 9 must be offered the following minimum number of instructional hours each year

450 hours of instruction for Kindergarten.

850 hours of instruction for Grades 1 to 9.

Courses in English Language Social Studies and Science, Arts, Mathematics and the mandatory second language in Grades 5 - 8,

Grades K-9 Areas of Study Requirements
For Grades K-7, an authority must offer the following areas of study to all students:

(a) Physical Education,
(b) Social Studies,
(c) Mathematics,
(d) Science,
(e) English Language Arts,
(f) Fine Arts/Arts Education: Dance, Drama, Music, or Visual Arts,
(g) Health and Career Education,
(h) Daily Physical Activity.

All mandatory second language courses must be provincially-approved.

For Grades 8 and 9, an authority must offer an educational program each year to all students that includes the following:

(a) Mathematics,
(b) Social Studies,
(c) English Language Arts,
(d) Science,
(e) Physical Education,
(f) one of the following Fine Arts: Dance, Drama, Music, or Visual Arts,
(g) one of the following Applied Skills: Home Economics, or Business Education, Technology Education, Information Education,
(h) Health and Career Education 8 and 9
(i) Daily Physical Activity

Graduation Program Requirements (Grades 10-12)

students must earn at least 80 credits by successfully completing Grade 10, 11 and 12 courses
