Virginia International University (VIU) was established in 1998. It is a private, non-profit institution of higher education located in Fairfax, Virginia.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for MBA students

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is employment pursuant to an internship requirement or internship elective which is an integral part of the established curriculum of your school.

CPT Eligible Courses

An F–1 visa student may be authorized by the DSO to participate in a CPT program that is an integral part of an established curriculum.

CPT is defined to be alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.

The CPT component of any course is equal to only one (1) or three (3) credit hours.

CPT is an optional component of specific degree programs at VIU.

Students who wish to pursue CPT should consult with the School Dean or the Career Center for the required paperwork and permission.

Option 1:

CPT for PARTIAL CREDIT (1 credit)

All concentration courses are CPT-eligible.

The one credit hour represents only one credit portion of a whole three-credit course; students must attend instruction for the remaining two credits.

CPT is an optional component of the course.

Students who wish to pursue this CPT option should consult with the Dean for the required paperwork and permission.

Option 2:

CPT for FULL 3 CREDITS (taken as elective courses)

The CPT component of any of the courses listed below is equal to (3) credit hours.

MBA 560: Graduate Internship I (3)

Prerequisite: None

This course provides practical learning experience and application for qualified graduate students in a business concentration area such as: finance, accounting, management, HR, marketing, international business, global logistics, etc. The objective of the course is to provide hands-on and practical work experience in their business concentration that will give students a competitive advantage when they graduate. Students will have a chance to gain work experience in areas of their interest and gain exposure to the business environment, industry practices and key contacts for future employment opportunities. This three (3) credit hour internship is for students who are expected to work a minimum of 135 hours during the semester. Students are required to attend two meetings/seminars with their faculty advisor to determine learning objectives and assess how well learning objectives are being accomplished.

MBA 660: Graduate Project Internship II (3)

Prerequisite: None

This course provides work exposure to qualified graduate students in their area of interest for their advanced research project. The objective of the course is to give students access to information and individuals that would help in the concept and/or development of their area of interest for their graduate research project. This three (3) credit hour project internship is for students who are expected to work a minimum of 135 hours during the semester. Students are required to attend two meetings/seminars with their faculty advisor to determine learning objectives and assess how well learning objectives are being accomplished.
