The Marine Engineering and Research Institute, formerly known as the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training, now known as Indian Maritime University - Kolkata Campus and Mumbai Port Campus, is India's national institute and one of the institutes for the training of Marine Engineers and Polyvalent Officers


Marine Engineering & Research Institute

MERI-symbolizes the birth of marine engineering training in India.

The Institute was established at the onset of Independence of India in 1947 to satisfy the growing need of marine engineers in India.

It was founded in 1949 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as "Directorate Of Marine Engineering Training' (DMET) with its headquarter in Calcutta and a branch at Bombay, under the Ministry of Shipping (Government of India).

It was renamed "Marine Engineering and Research Institute" in 1995

IMU Kolkata now offers the following academic programmes:


1) B.Tech in Marine Engineering
2) M.Tech in Marine Engineering & Management
3) MBA in International Transportation & Logistics Management


Ex-cadets of this institute are well established not only in shipping but also in many other areas of administrative services, management, entrepreneurship etc. To name a few, the following names may be mentioned:-

Mr. B.K. Biswas - Ex-Chief Surveyor, Government of India.
Mr. R. Bajpai - CEO, Bernhard Schulte Pte Ltd.
Mr. Arun Sengupta - Ex Country-Manager, Llyods Register of Shipping.
Mr. B.R.K. Gupta - Ex Country-Manager, Llyods Register of Shipping.
Mr. R. Asoke - Present country-manager, American Bureau of Shipping.
Mr. R.C. Bhavnani - Ex country-manager, American Bureau of Shipping.
Mr. D. Majumder - Registrar, DOT, Government of United Kingdom.
Mr. M.K. Dutta - Civil Servant, Government of United Kingdom.


This institute has had the privilege of hosting many prominent personalities throughout the past years since its inception, on various occasions. A few of them are :-
