INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES 1. To educate the students about the various biomolecules at structural and functional level. 2. To provide understanding on the metabolic pathways and their effects. 3. To update knowledge about various metabolic disorders. UNIT I-STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF BIOMOLECULES (10 hours) Classification, characteristics and functions of carbohydrates - monosaccharides, complex carbohydrate. Lipids – types of membrane lipids, phospholipids and glycolipids. Protein structure and functions – primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures. Nucleic acids – structure and functions. UNIT II-BIOENERGETICS AND METABOLISM (10 hours) Energetics-ATP as energy currency, biologic oxidation, structural organization and electron flow of respiratory chain, chemiosmotic theory of oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondrial membrane transporters- shuttle systems. UNIT III-METABOLISM OF CARBOHYDRATES AND PROTEINS (9 hours) Carbohydrate metabolism - Glycolysis, Glucogenesis, Citric acid cycle and Glycogen metabolism.Protein metabolism - Urea cycle, degradation of amino acids.
