5. Write the medical applications of laser.

6. Write about the working of F.P.Etalon.

7. Explain the principle of optical resonator.

All questions carry equal marks.

9. Discuss the principle of momentum carried by an electromagnetic wave propagating in free space.

10. Explain the intensity variations for different angles of incidence of an electromagnetic wave at a surface separating two dielectric media. Obtain the conditions for total internal reflection and Brewster angle.

11. Explain the theory, principle and working of Michelson interferometer for the determination of wavelength of a monochromatic source.

12. Discuss the theory of a diffraction grating.

13. Explain how Raleigh’s theory of scattering accounted for blue colour of the sea.

14. Explain the conditions for population inversion and laser pumping in a two level laser.

15. Discuss the contraction and working of a He-Ne laser.

16. (a) Explain different types of optical fibers.

(b) Write about the advantages of graded step index fiber.

1. State Maxwell's equations in integral form and point form. Explain their significance.

2. Define the term displacement current and give its physical significance.

3. Discuss the phenomenon of total internal reflection on the basis of electromagneitc theory of light.

4. Distinguish between normal and anomolous dispersion.

5. Explain briefly the method of determination of specific charge of an electron.

6. What is a F. P. Etalon? What is its use?

7. Mention the different types of optical resonators.

8. Give the classification of optical fibres.

SECTION - B (5 x 16 = 80)

Answer any FIVE questions.

ALL questions carry EQUAL marks.

9. What is meant by Poynting vector? Derive Poynting theorem from Maxwell's condition and explain the physical significance of the terms involved.

10. Deduce Maxwell's equations of em field and discuss their physical significance. Explain the merits of Maxwell's equations.

11. Explain the theory of scattering of electromagnetic waves and explain the method of determining the various scattering parameters.

12. What is meant by plasma confinement? Explain the behaviour of plasma in a magnetic field. Give the importance of the pinch effect.

13. Explain Fraunhofer diffraction from a circular aperture with a neat diagram. Also, discuss the same for a rectangular aperture.

14. Discuss the principle and working of L.G. Plate with the theory and obtain an expression for the resolving poer.

15. Describe in detail the construction, principle and working of Helium-Neon laser with the diagram.

16. Explain the loss mechanism in optical fibres with special emphasize to

(a) Signal distortion due to dispersion.
(b) Loss in joints.
(c) Loss in couplers
and
(d) Loss in modulators.
