Loughborough University have a long tradition of working with business, industry and the public sector on the application of research to meet real-world challenges.


Research Partnerships


Caterpillar Innovation and Research Centre
Launched in 2011, the Caterpillar Innovation and Research Centre – a partnership between Loughborough University and Caterpillar –investigates new low-emissions technologies for large internal combustion engines in off-road applications.


Energy Research Accelerator
The Energy Research Accelerator, which involves the six Midlands Innovation universities and the British Geological Survey, aims to foster research and develop new technologies to shape the UK’s energy landscape over the next 40 years.


Energy Technologies Institute (ETI)
With its headquarters based on the Loughborough campus, at the heart of the University’s Science and Enterprise Park, the ETI brings together projects that accelerate the development of affordable, clean, secure technologies needed to help the UK meet its 2050 climate change targets.


Midlands Innovation
Midlands Innovation is a world-class research and innovation partnership, combining the collective excellence of the universities of Loughborough, Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Nottingham and Warwick.


Midlands Energy Consortium
The Midlands Energy Consortium is comprised of the universities of Loughborough, Birmingham, Nottingham and Warwick, and the British Geological Survey.


Midlands Energy Graduate School (MEGS)
Collaboration between the universities of Birmingham, Loughborough and Nottingham, MEGS brings together postgraduate students, recent graduates and academics as well as industrial partners in internationally-leading research environment.


National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine
Located on the Loughborough University campus, the East Midlands hub is one of three in the UK that together comprise the country’s first-ever National Sport and Exercise Medicine Centre of Excellence.


NIHR and BRU
Launched in 2011, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester-Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) looks at how physical activity, diet and lifestyle can impact upon the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes.

It is collaborative venture between Loughborough University, University Hospitals of Leicester and the University of Leicester.


Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC)
Formed in 1991, the UTC is a strategic partnership between Loughborough University and Rolls-Royce for advanced technology development and associated research.


The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC)
Based in Ansty Park, Coventry, the MTC is a collaborative partnership between industry and four research partners – the universities of Loughborough, Birmingham and Nottingham, and TWI.
