A proposal was made in 1980 to establish a Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery at the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), New Delhi.

The department would perform only complicated GI operations which were not usually done elsewhere in the country, train surgeons from other parts of the country and do research into Indian GI surgical problems. The department was created as a unit of the Department of Surgery in May 1985.
