Kuvempu University is a public state university established in 1987 by the act of the Karnataka state legislature through amendment No. 28/1976 dated 29 January 1989 under the Karnataka State University Act 1976.

It has university jurisdiction over malnad districts of Shimoga and Chikmagalur, through which the Sahyadri mountain ranges pass.

Vice Chancellor

Prof. Jogan Shankar is the Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University. He is a renowned sociologist and researcher whose projects and writings have initiated constructive measures against unjust social practices.

He has received Ambedkar Centenary Award (1992) from the Government of Karnataka as well as Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar Award (2006).
