Advanced Mathematical Methods


UNIT I
TRANSFORM METHODS Laplace transforms methods for one-dimensional wave equation – Displacements in a long string – Fourier transform methods for one-dimensional heat conduction problems in finite and semi-infinite rod.


UNIT II
ELIPTIC EQUATIONS
Laplace equation – Properties of harmonic functions – Fourier transform methods for Laplace equation


UNIT III
CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS Variation and its properties – Euler’s equation – Functionals dependent on first and higher order derivatives– Functionals dependent on functions of several independent variables – Some applications – Direct methods: Rayleigh-Ritz and Kantorovich methods.


UNIT IV PROBABILITY AND RANDOM VARIABLES
Probability - Random variables - Moments – Moment Generating Function – Standard Distributions –Functions of random variables – Two dimensional random variables – Correlation and Regression.


UNIT V ESTIMATION THEORY
Principles of least squares – Multiple and partial correlation and regression – Estimation of parameters –Maximum Likelihood Estimates – Method of Moments
