Rhodes University is a public research university located in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa was established in 1904. In 2011 Webometrics ranked it as the 5th largest in South Africa and 700th in the world. The courses offered by School of Journalism and Media Studies - Rhodes University are as follows: Degrees and Diplomas Honours in Journalism and Media Studies Post Graduate diploma in Journalism and Media Studies Post Graduate diploma in Media Management Post Graduate diploma in Economics Journalism Masters in Journalism and Media Studies PHD in Journalism and Media Studies Honours Courses are taught by qualified practitioner academics, and plugged into the currents of modern journalism, the Honours programme produces graduates who find the best places in media across the African continent, or with conceptual and research skills for advanced study in the field. One need to choose from one of our four Honours specialisation streams, with complementary combinations to make up a five-paper Honours Degree: 1. Health Journalism: 3 papers 2. Legal Journalism: 3 papers 3. Economics Journalism: 3 papers 4. Media Studies & Popular Culture: Representation, Identity & Social Change; Popular Film; Mobile Communication; Popular Media. Each stream also has an associated practical writing paper. Honours students can also choose to do a research paper, or one paper in another department (subject to approval by JMS and the other department). The University reserves the right not to offer one of the above-mentioned papers or specialisations if student numbers do not warrant it. Admission requirements Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline will be appropriate for applying for the Honours Degree. Applications close 30 September. Each applicant need to submit: • A CV; • An academic transcript; • A letter of motivation, indicating which specialisation/s one is interested in.
