Jagannath University is a government financed public university established in 1858. As an A+ grade ranked university by University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, it has 36 departments under seven faculties.

In 2011-2012, the Jagannath University made it into the list of "Top World Universities" by the ranking agency Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds (THE–QS), UK. Out of over 30,000 universities around the world, JnU was placed as 2204.[8]
