The paper pattern for Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) Main and Advanced Exam both is as follows:

JEE Main Exam Paper Pattern

JEE Main Exam Pattern – Paper I (B.E. /B. Tech)


• Mode of examination:
The paper I will be conducted in two separate modes.
One is the offline mode (Pen and paper Based Examination) and the other is the online mode (Computer Based Examination).
One has to opt for either of the two modes during the time of registration.

• Subjects and type of questions:
The subject combination is Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
There will be 30 objective type questions with equal weightage to each subject.

• Time limit:
For both the offline and online mode of examination, one is given a duration of 3 hours to complete the paper.
The exam will start in the morning from 9:30-12:30.
However, in the online mode, a second shift might be allotted to the students which will start from 2pm- 5pm, if required.
However, one with 40% or more disability will be given one hour extra time to finish the paper.

• Language:
The question paper of will be available in Hindi and English medium.
The examination centers in Gujarat, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli will be given the language choice of Gujarati as well along with Hindi and English mediums.

• Marking scheme:
Out of the four given response in each question, there is only one correct response. The correct answers will be allotted 4 marks and 1 mark will be deducted for indicating wrong answer of each question.

JEE Main Exam Pattern- Paper II (B.Arch. / B. Planning)

• Mode of Examination:
Paper II question paper will be available only in offline mode.

• Subjects and type of questions:
The subject combination is Mathematics Part I, Aptitude test Part II and Drawing test Part III.
The Mathematics and Aptitude section will contain 30 objective type questions whereas the Drawing section will contain 7 questions out of which candidates will need to attempt any two.

As per the JEE Main Exam Pattern the time limit, language and marking scheme is similar to that in Paper I.


JEE Advanced Paper Pattern

The JEE Advanced Paper Pattern states that the exam will have two papers:

Paper 1 and Paper 2

The question papers will only be available in two languages – English and Hindi. One has to choose the medium they prefer at the time of applying for the exam.
Each paper will have three sections and exam duration of three hours:
• Section 1 will be Physics,
• Section 2 will be Chemistry, and
• Section 3 will be Mathematics.

Paper 1
Section 1 has 10 MCQs. Each question has four options with only one correct answer. It has 8 MCQs. Each question has four options with one or more correct answer(s).

Section 2 has 5 MCQs. Each question has four options with one or more correct answer(s). It has 8 MCQs. Each question has four options with only one correct answer. It has four paragraphs with theory, practical aspects, data etc. 2 questions will be asked from each paragraph.

Section 3 has 5 questions with answers in single digit integer ranging from 0 to 9.
It has Matching List type questions. Two lists are given with matching options coded as a, b, c, and d. One has to choose options according to the given code.


Paper 2
The Upper sheet of the Answer booklet is the Optical Response Sheet (ORS), which is designed in a way that machines can read answers. It will have two pages stuck together with no carbon in between.

One has to mark the appropriate bubbles for each question on the front page, which will automatically be recorded in the sheet below.

One can use only the black ball point pen for the exam. Also, read the instructions carefully as cannot change the answers have marked already.

The invigilator will give the copy of the sheet at the end of the exam which can match with the JEE Advanced answer key later.
