The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is the space agency of the Government of Republic of India headquartered in the city of Bangalore.

Its vision is to "harness space technology for national development", while pursuing space science research and planetary exploration

The establishment of ISRO thus institutionalized space activities in India. It is managed by the Department of Space, which reports to the Prime Minister of The Republic of India.

ISRO Position and Awards


It is the only Organization in India which is devoted with the space activities. It is among the few Organizations in world for space activities.

Its Chandrayaan-1 became the first lunar mission to discover existence of water on the Moon. The Chandrayaan-166 team was awarded the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics SPACE 2009 award, the International Lunar Exploration Working Group's International Co-operation award in 2008, and the National Space Society's 2009 Space Pioneer Award in the science and engineering category.

The National Space Society awarded the Mars Orbiter Mission team of ISRO with the 2015 Space Pioneer Award in the science and engineering category.


It is managed by the Department of Space (DoS) of the Government of India. DoS itself falls under the authority of the Prime Minister and the Space Commission, and manages the following agencies and institutes:

• Development and Educational Communication Unit (DECU), Ahmedabad.
• Master Control Facility (MCF), Hassan, Karnataka.
• ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), Bangalore.
• Laboratory for Electro-Optics Systems (LEOS), Bangalore.
• Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun.
• Antrix Corporation - The marketing arm of ISRO, Bangalore.
• Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad.
• National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL), Gadanki, Andhra pradesh.
• North-Eastern Space Applications Centre (NE-SAC), Umiam.
