The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) is a public engineering institution established by the government of India in 1951. It was the first of the IITs to be established, and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.

Ranking
Internationally, IIT Kharagpur was ranked 308 in the QS World University Rankings of 2018. The same rankings ranked it 62 in Asia and 24 among BRICS nations.

It was ranked 501-600 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018, 60 in Asia and 71 among BRICS & Emerging Economies University Rankings in 2017.

It ranked 2nd among engineering colleges in India by India Today in 2017, 3rd among engineering colleges by Outlook India and The Week, and 4th among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2018, which also ranked it 5th overall.

Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law is ranked fourth among Law schools in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2018.
