Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of IIT, Madras has a vibrant research community. Research topics encompass fields as diverse as Agricultural Policy, Linguistics, German Studies, African / American / English / Indian Literature, Discourse Analysis, English Language Teaching, Economics, Health Care Policy, Philosophy, Sociology, Indian History and Theatre and Film Studies. Admission Procedure: Admission is based on Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M). Entrance test is conducted online for admission to five-year integrated Master's program. Eligibility Criteria: 1. Age Limit: Candidates, who are not above 25 years of age, are eligible to apply for the entrance test. 2. Age Relaxation: There is a relaxation of 5 years for the SC/ST candidates. 3. Qualification: Candidates must have completed Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (10+2) or its equivalent examination under 10+2 patterns with minimum 60% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination. Examination Pattern: Part One: Type: Objective-type questions Duration: Two and a half hours Subjects: English and Comprehension skill, Analytical and Quantitative ability and General Knowledge Part Two: Candidates have to write an essay on any given topic, which is also in English medium. Duration: Half-an-hour Syllabus of Exam: English: Vocabulary Skill, Remedial Grammar, improving Sentences and Reading Comprehension and Inferential Skill Analytical and Quantitative: Ability linear equations, elementary trigonometry, Numbers, Algebra, Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Data Interpretation, Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Basic Statistics – Average, Ratio and proportion - Mixtures, Profit and Loss, Percentages etc. General Studies: Candidates should be thorough with the topics regarding Environment and Ecology, Contemporary World Affairs (post-World War II) and Indian Society and Indian Economics.
