The Civil Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India, an autonomous entity established in 1950.

CSAT comprise of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each and of two hours duration each. The questions are of multiple choices, objective type.

The candidate needs to score a minimum 33% of marks for qualifying in Mains (written).

The Main Written Examination is only for candidates who have been short listed through the Preliminary CSAT Written Examination.

It consists of 7 papers. Paper on Indian languages (250 marks), English (300 marks), General Studies–I(Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society)(250Marks), General Studies (three papers each of 250 marks) and any two optional subjects chosen by the candidate (each having two papers of 250 marks each) and a Personality Test (275 Marks).

CSAT Exam Syllabus

Syllabus of Paper I -(200 marks) Duration : Two hours

o Current events of national and international importance.
o History of India and Indian National Movement.
o Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
o Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
o Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
o General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialisation General Science.

Syllabus for Paper II-(200 marks) Duration: Two hours

o Comprehension
o Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
o Logical reasoning and analytical ability
o Decision-making and problemsolving
o General mental ability
o Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
