Re: How to become a flight engineer

Flight engineers monitor the many instruments used on airplanes during flight and provide routine maintenance when en-route.

Requirement to Become a Flight Engineer

1. Required Education

Commercial airlines require flight engineers to have at least a bachelor's degree.

While they can technically study any subject as undergraduates, many aspiring flight engineers and pilots major in aviation or aeronautic studies.

2. Licensure

Flight engineers must obtain a commercial pilot's license, have at least 1,500 hours of flying experience, and pass a series of physical and psychological tests.

Flight engineers have to continue training throughout their career to maintain their license.

3. Skills Required

Flight engineers must have a strong background in flying aircraft.

You need to be adept at reading instruments, dials, and other tools used in planes.

Leadership and the ability to make decisions quickly are desirable traits, and flight engineers must be in top physical form.

Tips for Becoming a Flight Engineer

In order to become a flight engineer, you must:

Demonstrate acute knowledge in electrical, communication, mechanical and the pneumatic fields.

Gain crucial expertise in the hydraulic and related systems within the aircraft.

Develop a good understanding of flight theory, flight maintenance and other equipment within the aircraft.

Impress your chain of command and peers with your ability to understand and interpret diagrams, charts, publications and flight journals.

Job Opportunities

You can find job assistance at various flight schools.

The FAA also enlists the various jobs available.

You may also apply directly to the major airlines.

The information on various airlines is available at the Air Transport Association of America.
