Re: HMS School For Children
HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy serves school-age children and young adults through age 21 who have complex, multiple disabilities usually resulting from cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury or other neurological impairment. Admission Process The admissions process is collaboration between HMS, the school district and the family. Admission is on a rolling basis throughout the year and is based on several factors, including a child’s ability to actively participate in and benefit from our program. It enrolls students from throughout Pennsylvania, the US and occasionally from foreign countries. The process includes: A parent or school district professional contacts HMS to exchange initial information about the potential applicant. The school district usually makes the referral or agrees that the family look at HMS as a placement. HMS responds with an information packet. Parents need to keep their school district informed. The interested parents tour the school. The school district and family submit school records and relevant medical information of the student and HMS’s admission committee evaluate the material. If it considers the student a possible candidate, the application remains active until it expects an opening and schedules a student evaluation. A multidisciplinary team including a special education teacher, speech/language pathologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, social worker and, sometimes, the Director of Nursing Services conducts the evaluation and prepares a comprehensive written report outlining recommendations for education and therapy interventions. Based on the evaluation, the admission committee makes a final determination. If the family and school district agree on the placement, enrollment can take place at any time during the school year when there is an opening and funding is secured. Once the student is accepted for admission and funding is in place, HMS’s social worker and the family together facilitate the child’s transition to HMS.
