Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an all India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering and Technology of the candidates.

GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board

GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology or Architecture or Master's degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for admission to Master's degree program in Engineering/Technology/Architecture as well as for Doctoral program in relevant branches of Science with MHRD or other government scholarships/assistantships.

Admission to Roorkee IIT in PG programs is totally based of GATE score and/or on the basis of the written test and interview.
