French Schools Wednesday Off

Why French schools are close on Wednesday can you please tell me the reason of that and the list of French schools in Canada?

Most of the schools are open on Wednesday mornings. It is considered good for young children to have a break during their weekends. Wednesday is the day when children can play sports and some can do part-time working and there Mothers stay in home.
