The son of a barber and a homemaker, he attended St. Paul elementary and secondary schools. Only 17 when he arrived on the campus of Xavier University in 1948 as a scholarship student, he quickly emerged as a leader. He was elected class president each year of his undergraduate study and student body president his senior year. He graduated with honors from Xavier in 1952. About the university: Xavier University of Louisiana, founded by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, is Catholic and historically Black.
