The history of Nalanda dates back to the periods of Lord Mahavira and Lord Buddha during the 6th century. It is also reputed for being the birthplace of Sariputra, a close follower of Lord Buddha.

At its peak Nalanda University which was at the time amongst world's first residential universities was inhabited by 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers.
