Re: DCE Services
The DCE Directory Service is a central repository for information about resources in the distributed system. Typical resources are users, machines, and RPC-based services. DCE/RPC, short for "Distributed Computing Environment / Remote Procedure Calls", is the remote procedure call system developed for the Distributed Computing Environment. Services provided by DCE: Remote procedure call (RPC) Directory Service Security Service Time Service File Service Threads DCE is based on three distributed computing models: Client/server A way of organizing a distributed application Remote procedure call A way of communicating between parts of a distributed application Shared files A way of handling data in a distributed system, based on a personal computer file access model. Uses: Pennsylvania State University's student information portal, eLion the older version of HP OpenView Operations for Unix/Windows Agents Microsoft Exchange/Outlook (MAPI/RPC) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for Multiplayer lobbies, making small clouds to decide on a host or lobby migration. History: The specification documents ordered by release date: "P312 DCE: Remote Procedure Call" (not available online) is dated 15/10/1993 "C309 DCE: Remote Procedure Call" (not available online) is dated 15/08/1994 Corrigenda U010 X/Open DCE: Remote Procedure Call is dated 15/11/1995 C706 DCE 1.1: Remote Procedure Call is dated 15/08/1997, which is the current and complete specification |
