The Rajiv Gandhi University is also known Arunachal University. The university was established in 1984.

This is the oldest university in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The foundation stone for the university was laid by the then Prime Minister of India Late Smt.

The Rajiv Gandhi University is the premier institution for higher education in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and has completed twenty five years of its existance.

The University got academic recognition under section 2(f) from the University Grants Commission on 28th March, 1985 and started functioning from 1st April, 1985.
