Poverty in India is Widespread, and a Variety of Methods have been Proposed to Measure it.

The official measure of Indian government, before 2005, was based on food security and it was defined from per capita expenditure for a person to consume enough calories and be able to pay for associated essentials to survive.


Indian government adopted the Tendulkar methodology which moved away from calorie anchor to a basket of goods and used rural, urban and regional minimum expenditure per capita necessary to survive.

Rural poverty is a multi-dimensional social problem. Its causes are varied. They are as follows:

Climatic factors

Demographic factors
The following demographic factors are accountable for poverty in India


Rapid growth of population
Size of family

Personal Causes:

Lack of motivation
Idleness

Economic Causes

Low agricultural productivity
Unequal distribution of land and other assets
Decline of village industries
Immobility of labour
Lack of employment opportunities

Social Causes:

Education
Caste System
Joint Family System
Social customs
Growing indebtedness


Rapidly Rising Population
Low Productivity in Agriculture
Under Utilized Resources
Low Rate of Economic Development
Price Rise
Unemployment
Shortage of Capital and Able Entrepreneurship
