Pondicherry University is a central university in Puducherry founded in 1985 by the Government of India. The university is a collegiate university with a jurisdiction spread over the Union Territories of Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Pondicherry University was ranked 801-1000 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018 and 251-300 in Asia. The QS World University Rankings of 2018 ranked it 301-350 in Asia. It was ranked 86 in India overall by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2018 and 59 among universities.

Campus

The main campus of Pondicherry University has an area of 800 acres spread on either side of the East Coast Road. The land is an invaluable gift from the people and the Government of Puducherry for the establishment of the University. The land gently rolls down to the beaches and is interspersed with lovely woods.

The University has also PG Centres at Karaikal and Port Blair, Karaikal Centre offers 3 PG programmes. Port Blair Centre offers 2 PG programmes and 2 Ph.D. programmes. The university has entered into MoUs with a good number of reputed international institutions in India and abroad for collaboration and faculty development.
